The Financial Controller is responsible for accurate and timely reporting of financial performance to management, the restaurant operations team, and external parties, ensuring financial statements are prepared in accordance with ASPE (Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises). This role is responsible for leading a team of direct and indirect reports by coaching and developing people, by improving efficiencies in accounting processes and procedures and by managing the workflow of the group.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and thorough review of financial reports for the restaurants, including Balance Sheet schedules, Profit & Loss (P&L) statements and other financial reports, to ensure accounting controls and processes are followed;
  • Team development, spending time one-on-one and group coaching sessions;
  • Monitor and improve efficiencies and effectiveness of accounting processes;
  • Responsible for managing Sage 300 and Blackline, including new store, employee and GL account setup, completing the year end closing process and creating new fiscal calendars;
  • Prepare audit working papers for year end and coordinate with auditors;
  • Oversee and coordinate the timing of period, quarter and year end reporting for multiple companies;
  • Involvement in planning and onboarding for newly acquired markets;
  • Prepare GL account reconciliations and admin fee allocations for Franchise Management Inc.;
  • Analyze G&A costs and make recommendations for changes and cost savings;
  • Prepare GL entries and supporting schedules/working papers for complex transactions, acquisitions and real estate transactions;
  • Prepare quarter end financial reporting packages for lenders;
  • Supervise & review sales tax filling in Canada & US;
  • Approve Account Reconciliations on the Blackline on a periodic basis;
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by Director of Finance.

Qualifications

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation;
  • Minimum 5 years experience in an intermediate or senior finance position;
  • Solid knowledge of accounting principles;
  • Able to lead and coach direct reports, with prior managerial experience preferred;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Great at problem solving, with an ability to think outside the box;
  • Strong knowledge and capabilities in spreadsheets.
