About the UNB Finance Team

UNB Finance is a team of approximately 65 people who lead, direct, and develop strategic and operational planning for the university's finances. This unit reports to the Vice President Administration and Finance and serves the Board of Governors as well as the following Board Committees, Finance & Properties Committee, Audit Committee, and Investments Committee.

About the role

Reporting to the AVP Finance and Comptroller, the Director, Financial Services oversees Student Accounts & Receivables; Accounts Payable & Disbursements; Payroll and Procurement. To ensure success, the incumbent requires well developed human resource skills and an in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. The incumbent will provide critical financial advice and information to the University community. Specifically, they will:

  • Lead a talented and dedicated team of professionals in the continuous, effective and efficient functioning of the Department and support their growth and development by setting clear goals, providing feedback, coaching, and mentoring;
  • Oversee the processing of key financial transactions at the University which includes ensuring accuracy and completeness of accounting records and transactions; researching and resolving accounting issues and discrepancies; performing reconciliations, audits, and adjustments as needed; and coordinating with external auditors, as required;
  • Drive efficiency and process simplification in the financial operations of the organization by leveraging technology solutions to build capacity;
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal control systems and processes within the areas of payroll, student accounts, procurement, and payables to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational standards and policies;
  • Coordinate the continuing development and efficient management of the University's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system (Colleague), this involves working closely with several university departments including People & Culture and Information Technology Services;
  • Ensure the relevancy and accuracy of the information maintained on the Department's website, including the timely update of student fees, policies and procedures;
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

What you bring:

  • Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation;
  • 10+ years' experience in progressively responsible positions, preferably within a complex, multi-stakeholder, unionized environment;
  • 5+ years of supervisory and leadership experience, demonstrating an ability to be open-minded, flexible and adaptable.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Aptitude for understanding new technologies and experience managing a large, complex ERP;
  • Excellent organizational skills, with an ability to co-ordinate and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously;
  • Strong working knowledge of government regulations;
  • Ability to provide clear, concise and well-researched explanations to questions and / or concerns;
  • Ability to create and foster a team environment.

Salary range

$92,717 -$126,364 per annum.
